V-series Smartmodem 9600
Mon 09-16-1991
-------------------------
V-series Smartmodem 9600
Hayes V-series Smartmodem 9600 is a cost effective solution for high
speed communications. The modem provides advanced error-control and
data compression features that increase the speed and reliability of
telecommunications across dial-up lines. Offering ten times the
speed of 2400 bps, V-series Smartmodem 9600 supports Express 96
(formerly known as Hayes fast turnaround "Ping Pong" protocol) to
provide data throughput of 20 - 25 Kbps (depending on the file) when
the PC port speed is set to 38.4 Kbps.
V-series Smartmodem 9600 provides the advanced features of ULTRA 96, but
supports Express 96, a Hayes proprietary modulation that simulates
full-duplex 9600 bps operation, instead of CCITT V.32. The modem provides
unique high performance features that are not found as a complete offering
in any other product. These unique features include Hayes AutoSync,
Express 96, CCITT X.32 (Dial X.25) with Hayes AutoStream, MI/MIC, and
backward compatibility with MNP( 2-5, Hayes Adaptive Data Compression, and
LAPB to provide a migration path to CCITT V.42 and V.42bis.
MODULATION
International Data Transmission Standards - Supports CCITT V.22bis (2400
bps) and CCITT V.22 (1200 bps) transmissions.
Industry Data Transmission Compatibility - Supports communication with
103 (300 bps) and 212A (1200 bps) modems.
Express 96 - A Hayes proprietary modulation that simulates full-duplex
9600 bps operation when communicating at 9600 bps to other V-series
Smartmodem 9600 or ULTRA 96 modems.
ERROR-CONTROL
CCITT V.42 - Provides standardized, point-to-point error-control
communications using the CCITT V.42 LAPM (Link Access Procedure for
Modems) protocol. CCITT V.42's alternative protocol provides backward
compatibility with modems using MNP 2-4.
V-series LAPB - The original error-control protocol used in the V-series
Smartmodem 9600 was based on CCITT X.32 (Dial X.25) specifications. All
V-series Smartmodem 9600s support LAPB which provides link-level
error-control in compliance with global standards.
DATA COMPRESSION
CCITT V.42bis - CCITT V.42bis international data compression standard
provides compression capabilities up to 4:1, enabling V-series Smartmodem
9600 to achieve throughput up to 20 - 25 Kbps.
Hayes Adaptive Data Compression (ADC) - V-series Smartmodem 9600
implements ADC to provide compatibility with the installed base of
original V-series system products to attain compression capabilities up to
2:1 for throughput up to 19.2 Kbps. Original V-series system products
support this compression.
MNP 5 - Supports backward compatibility with modems using MNP 5 for up to
2:1 compression.
TELEPHONE LINE INTERFACE
Dial-up Line - Supports pulse or tone generated dial out or auto answer
for Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
PABX and Business Line Support - V-series Smartmodem 9600 operates in a
variety of PABX environments and has selectable features for operation in
business environments.
PACKET SWITCHED NETWORK CONNECTIVITY
CCITT X.32 Standard - Supports X.32 (Dial X.25) standard for dial-up
compatibility with Packet Switched Networks worldwide.
Error-Control - Supports either point-to-point or point-to-multipoint
communications using X.25 Packet Switched Networks.
Triple X PAD - V-series Smartmodem 9600 provides a Triple-X PAD (Packet
Assembler/Disassembler) in the modem by implementing 1988 versions of
CCITT X.3, X.28, and X.29.
Hayes AutoStream - Supports up to four simultaneous virtual sessions
using the Hayes AutoStream protocol to support and manage the sessions.
Smartcom III( Communications Software - With Smartcom III communications
software, users are not required to learn PAD commands. The program
allows easy set up as well as stored configuration for calling up
CCITT X.32 (Dial X.25) networks.
MODEM CONTROL AND OPERATION
Hayes Standard AT Command Set - Full support for this industry standard
enables V-series Smartmodem 9600 to operate with the large installed
worldwide base of communications software.
Hayes Escape Sequence with Guard Time - Allows the modem to reliably
escape from the on-line mode of operation (receiving/transmitting data) to
the command mode (interpreting the Hayes Standard AT Command Set) without
being accidentally triggered by transmitted data. U.S. Patent 4,549,302
was granted to Hayes on October 22, 1985.
Automatic Feature Negotiation - V-series Smartmodem 9600 automatically
negotiates with other modems to analyze all features available
(modulation, error-control, data compression, etc.) to establish the most
efficient communications session. This powerful capability is implemented
transparently, making V-series Smartmodem 9600 exceptionally easy to use
even though its feature set offers a wide range of capabilities and
communications options.
Automatic Speed Buffering - Allows V-series Smartmodem 9600 to provide a
fixed speed interface between the V-series product and its DTE (mainframe,
mini-computer, or PC). This enables the V-series
Smartmodem 9600 to communicate at varying speeds with other modems while
communicating at a fixed interface speed if required by its attached DTE.
Flow Control - Works with systems equipped with flow control to manage
the interface between the modem and the system to control buffers and
preserve data integrity, preventing inadvertent data loss between the
modem and the system.
MI/MIC - Allows a system such as a PABX or a call back security system to
instruct the modem to go off hook and establish a call.
TRANSMISSION MODES
Asynchronous Hardware Mode - Supports standard asynchronous
communications for dial-up communications with value added networks,
on-line services, and personal computers.
Synchronous Hardware Mode - The modem supports SDLC, HDLC and Bisync
synchronous transmission for connections to mainframes and mini-computers.
A PC using a synchronous adapter card is also supported.
Hayes AutoSync - V-series Smartmodem 9600 can use the system's standard
asynchronous communications port for synchronous communications,
eliminating the additional expense of a synchronous adapter card for SDLC
or Bisync. This convenient feature brings both asynchronous and
synchronous data transfer capability to your system in one communications
device.
